Karroo-avleiringane er ei fleire tusen meter tjukk lagrekkje av kontinentale sandsteinar frå permtida og trias, som dekkjer store område av det sørlege Afrika. Nedst i laget ligg dwykakonglomeratet, som utan tvil er ei gammal morene med isskurt stein oppå isskurt underlag. Det har altså vore nedising her, truleg i yngste karbon og eldste perm. Liknande moreneavsetjingar frå same tid i Sør-Amerika, Australia, India og Antarktis tyder på at desse områda den gong høyrte med til eit felles kontinent kalla Gondwanaland.
I Karroo-avleiringane finn ein mellom anna fossil av planteslekta Glossopteris og mange pattedyrliknande krypdyr.
