Bhagavata Purana.
Purana (sanskrit पुराण purāṇa, 'frå gamalt av') er namnet på fleire samlingar av hinduskrifter som inneheld ei rekke historier og allegoriar. Dei blei til etter vedaene, puranaene rekna som mahapurana, 'store puranaer', frå rundt 200-talet til 1100-talet. Desse puranaene er rekna for å gje truverdig kunnskap om hindugudar, ritar og stader. Dei mange andre puranaene blir gjerne kalla upapurana, 'lågare puranaer'. Utbreidde typar er sjtalapurana, som handlar om eit enkelt hindutempel eller pilegrimsstad, og kulapurana, som typisk tek for seg opphavet til ein kaste.
