Balutsjistan er den største provinsen i Pakistan, og utgjer rundt 43 % av flatevidda i landet. Han er også den fattigaste og tynnast folkesette. Dei viktigaste språka her er balutsji, pasjto, brahui og farsi.
Provinsen har kyst til Arabiahavet i Makran i sør og grenser mot Iran og Afghanistan i vest og dei pakistanske provinsane Sind og Panjab i aust og Dei pakistanske stammeområda i nord. Provinshovudstad og største by er Quetta som ligg i Sulaimanfjella, nordaust i Balutsjistan.
Provinsen utgjer den austlege delen av det større landskapet Balutsjistan. Sidan Pakistan blei uavhengig i 1947 har det vore fleire opprørsbølgjer her.
Balutsjistan har gått gjennom fleire jordskjelv. Jordskjelvet i 1935 øydela provinshovudstaden Quetta. Jordskjelvet i 1945, som hadde episenter i Makran, blei også merka i andre delar av Sør-Asia.
