Collingwood ligg i den vestlege delen i Golden Bay ved munningen til Aorere-elva. I denne byen endar riksvegen State Highway 60.
Historie |
Byen vart frå først av kalla Gibbstown etter den newzealandske politikaren William Gibbs, men fekk seinare namnet Collingwood etter admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, lord Nelson sin nestkommanderande i slaget ved Trafalgar. Under gullrusjåra på 1850-talet vaks folketalet i byen sterkt, og det kom framlegg om å gjera han til den nye hovudstaden på New Zealand. Byen vart sterkt øydelagd av brann i 1859 og på nytt i 1904.[2]

Byen er eit senter for økoturisme på grunn av nærleiken til Kahurangi National Park og Farewell Spit naturreservat.
