Carl Edward Sagan (9. november 1934–20. desember 1996) var ein amerikansk astronom, astrofysikar, forfattar, kosmolog og svært framgangsrik innanfor populærvitskap. I si levetid publiserte Sagan fleire enn 600 artiklar om vitskap og var forfattar, medforfattar eller redaktør for meir enn 20 bøker. I sine verk stod han for vitskapleg skeptisisme og den vitskaplege metoden. Han var ein pioner innanfor astrobiologi og fremja SETI.

Carl Edward Sagan voks opp i Brooklyn i ein russisk-jødisk familie. Som sjuåring las han sine første bøker om astronomi. Sjansane for liv på andre planetar inspirerte han tidleg, og han egna seg til studiar om dette emnet, noko som på 1960-talet knapt vart sedd som vitskapleg stovereint, men samstundes stimulert av den byrjande romalderen. Han var djupt skeptisk til at ufoar skulle ha vitja jorda, men sikker på at det ute i rømda finst former av intelligent liv, og han ville som astronom studere universet og få kontakt med "desse".
Sagan gjorde både ei framgangsrik akademisk karriere og ein etter kvart meir dominerande populærvitskapleg bane; ved sida av Arthur C Clarke kom han meir enn nokon annan til å personifisere møtet mellom astronomi og science fiction-influert diskusjon om utanomjordisk intelligens og om menneska og teknikken. Han var verksam i storparten av si karriere ved Cornell University, men også ein kortare sejour ved ein annan Ivy League-institusjon; Harvard University.
For arbeidet sitt tok Sagan mellom anna mot følgjande utmerkingar; "NASA medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement" og to gongar "NASA medal for Distinguished Public Service", samt "NASA Apollo Achievement Award". Asteroide 2709 Sagan er namngjeven etter han. Han har og fått "John F. Kennedy Astronautics Award of the American Astronautical Society", "the Explorers Club 75th Anniversary Award", "the Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Medal of the Soviet Cosmonauts Federation", og "the Masursky Award of the American Astronomical Society".
