As Hermione, herself points out, the only danger with the fake coins used for communication among Dumbledore's Army would be that someone might actually spend them. This brings up the possibility of using these Galleons to your advantage. While goblins can determine if a Galleon is fake, regular wizards probably don't check for that kind of thing. Therefore, shouldn't those Galleons have been illegal?

It's been a while since I read it.. but are you sure they are fake? It seems to me that legitimate Galleons would be easier to work with; just a Protean charm to modify the dates of the subordinate coins when the main was changed, and a temporary charm of some sort to modify the master. For all of them if the charm was removed (such as being washed by the Thief's downfall), the coin was normal. But even enchanted, the value hasn't changed, so 1 galleon was spent making a 1 galleon coin. It's been a while, tho -- I may be forgetting them being indicated as 'fake.'
